Google Plus – 7 Things to Like

OK, I got into Google Plus less than 48 hours ago and it has certainly gotten me back into the Social Media mindset.

Ron McDaniel Google PlusFor a long time I have not really liked twitter because it is so spammy and I have been mildly interested in FaceBook but not a huge fan.

So far, Google Plus is better for a few reasons.  Here are 7 things I like so far, and a few that concern me.

  1. Google Plus is Simple.  Sure, there were a couple of things that took me all of 10 seconds to figure out, but mostly it is simpler than any other social media tool I have used.
  2. So far, nearly spam free – I know that will change but for the time being, I am not seeing spam.  And I am more inclined to keep this new, fresh and friendly social media system free of spam.
  3. Circles – Putting people into Google Plus Circles makes it very interesting.  If you manage your circles well, they improve privacy and allow you to share more.
  4. Engaging – With the clean, simple interface I engage a lot more with people.  In less than two days I have already engaged one to one with some new people.
  5. Integration – I have always used some of the Google tools, such as docs, gmail and more.  Now with Google Plus making the entire thing social, I may migrate much more seriously into all the Google tools.
  6. Google Plus SEO – Short term it is not going to transform sites, but long term I think that knowing Google Plus will influence page rank and keyword rank will make everyone use Google Plus and also make people create better content.  Going viral is going to be more important than ever.
  7. Video – Although I have not tried Google Plus Hangouts yet, I have a feeling this is going to make me do more with video.  It is just going to make it all much simpler to chat with people.

Now what do I not like about Google+?

  1. No Vanity URL yet – I set up a redirect to my Ron McDaniel profile.
  2. Too many emails with the default setting – you have to edit settings or you will get too many emails.
  3. No way to add base pages – such as a fan page in FaceBook.  I would like to build landing pages for my different topics.

That is about it so far.  The pluses outweigh the negatives and I am really enjoying Google+ – be sure to add me to one of your circles so we can keep in touch.

Spying on Your Competition

Adam Short posted an article about spy tools that is excellent and in depth.  In it he talks about the different tools to spy on your competition and how to see the keywords and what they are doing.

Also, there are some very good Firefox plugins that help you spy on competition.

There are some things to keep in mind.

#1 Just because your competition has a nice looking website does not mean it is making money for them.  It would be a shame to put a lot of effort into targeting their traffic only to find there is very little traffic or they are tire kickers and not buyers.

#2 Just because your competition is doing it does not mean it is the best available.  Use Market Samurai and see if you can find some good niche keywords that your competition does not know about yet.

#3 Don’t spend so much time researching that you postpone writing blog posts or articles too long.  Content is key, and the longer you wait to get some good quality content out there, the faster you start competing with your competition.

I have still not heard of any tools that are all encompassing, such as looking at Twitter, FaceBook, SEO and more.  That would be really cook to get all of that in one snap shot.  If you find a tool like that please leave it in the comments.
